Fourier
Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR)
The
FTIR spectrometer is a highly advanced instrument for the measurement
of a wide range of gases. The technique is based on infrared absorption.
An infrared light beam is sent through a gas cell, the components
brought into this cell absorb the infrared light at its specific
wavelength. The absorption is proportional to the concentration.
This specific instrument (Siemens SESAM1) is developed in cooperation
with Siemens, Nicolet and Volkswagen/Audi and is therefore particularly
suitable for measurement of 28 components in car exhaust gases,
or the same components in other mixtures, which are measured typically
in the ppm range, depending on the component.
