Mass Spectrometry

Mass spectrometry analysis is performed by a robust gas analyser with a magnetic sector mass separator. Gas samples are bombed with electrons into fragments which are accelerated through a magnetic field to the detector. By controlled variation of the magnetic field the mass spectrum can be scanned. The intensity of the unique peak is proportional to the concentration. The VG Prima 600 mass spectrometer is suitable for qualitative analysis of gas mixtures with inorganic or low-mass organic components up to m/e 300, and quantitative analysis of gas mixtures containing N2, O2, CO2, NO, C3H5 and SO2 in the ppm range or higher.
