L\u2019activation neutronique permet une analyse qualitative et quantitative de plusieurs \u00e9l\u00e9ments majeurs, mineurs et oligo-\u00e9l\u00e9ments dans les \u00e9chantillons liquides et solides d&rsquo;environ 60 \u00e9l\u00e9ments (30-40 \u00e9l\u00e9ments en m\u00eame temps).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pour de nombreux \u00e9l\u00e9ments et applications, AAN offre une sensibilit\u00e9 sup\u00e9rieure \u00e0 celle atteintes par d&rsquo;autres techniques. Une limite de d\u00e9tection de 1.2 ppb est possible. La raison de cette haute sensibilit\u00e9 en cas d&rsquo;analyse par activation neutronique est que la plupart des matrices semblent \u00eatre transparentes; les \u00e9l\u00e9ments H, C, O, N, P, Si sont difficilement sous forme d&rsquo;isotopes radioactifs. En cons\u00e9quence, il n&rsquo;est pas n\u00e9cessaire d&rsquo;effectuer une pr\u00e9paration d\u2019\u00e9chantillons autres que la r\u00e9duction de la taille et (dans certains cas) de s\u00e9chage, ce qui rend la technique non-destructive et permet d&rsquo;\u00e9viter la dissolution compliqu\u00e9e comme c&rsquo;est souvent le cas avec d&rsquo;autres techniques d&rsquo;analyse chimique quantitative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Un autre avantage est que cette technique ne n\u00e9cessite que de petites quantit\u00e9s de mat\u00e9riel de l&rsquo;\u00e9chantillon &#8211; 100 \u00e0 200 milligrammes soient souvent suffisantes, mais si n\u00e9cessaire, de plus amples sp\u00e9cimens peuvent \u00eatre manipul\u00e9s. La m\u00e9thode est bas\u00e9e sur la conversion des nucl\u00e9ides stables en nucl\u00e9ides radioactifs (radionucl\u00e9ides) par irradiation avec des neutrons thermiques (neutrons de faible \u00e9nergie). Ces radionucl\u00e9ides se stabilisent par d\u00e9clin des noyaux radioactifs par la transmission de rayonnement gamma. L&rsquo;\u00e9nergie du rayonnement gamma des radionucl\u00e9ides est sp\u00e9cifique pour chaque \u00e9l\u00e9ment, fournissant une analyse qualitative compl\u00e8te de l&rsquo;\u00e9chantillon.
