What is volume-specific surface area (VSSA)?

Volume-specific surface area, or VSSA, is the specific surface area related to the true density of a material. It is expressed as an area per unit volume and can be useful when assessing nanomaterials because it reduces the influence of differences in material density.

Why is BET analysis used for nanomaterials?

Nanoparticles generally have a high surface-to-volume ratio and therefore often exhibit a high specific surface area. BET analysis can be used as a screening technique to identify materials that may contain nanoparticles or have a nanostructured surface.

What is BET surface area analysis?

BET surface area analysis is a gas adsorption technique used to measure the specific surface area of a material. Nitrogen gas is commonly adsorbed onto the sample at a controlled temperature, and the resulting data are used to calculate the surface area, typically expressed in square metres per gram (m²/g).
