About

Why the “Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)” course?

For asbestos research and other areas where understanding surface structure or particle shape is essential for product properties, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is an essential technique. In this course, you will learn the theoretical background and practical skills to apply SEM independently in your own working environment.

For whom is this course intended?

You have recently or will soon be working with SEM. You want to master the skills of the device and sample preparation.

Program

The programme

The following topics will be covered over three days.

Day 1:

  • Introduction
  • Different types of electron microscopes
  • Structure of the SEM
  • Electron-material interaction; imaging
  • Practical

Day 2:

  • SEM and safety
  • Making images
  • Recognition and interpretation of images
  • Interaction of electrons with material; element analysis or EDX
  • Practical

Day 3:

  • Sample pre-processing techniques
  • Calibration, maintenance and literature
  • Image recognition and discussion
  • Asbestos
  • Practical
  • Methodology

Theory and practical assignments alternate. State-of-the-art instruments are available in the laboratory, with which you perform relevant experiments in small groups under direct and expert supervision.

Result

The Result
